"FSC certified bamboo" appears in the product name of the best-selling promotional wireless chargers on the market, and corporate procurement teams increasingly ask for it. This guide explains what the label covers, what it does not, and how to check a supplier's claim before you commit to 1,000 units.
What FSC certifies
The Forest Stewardship Council certifies forest management and the chain of custody of wood-based materials. Bamboo is a grass, but FSC treats bamboo plantations under the same forest management standard, so a bamboo culm can carry FSC status from the plantation to the finished charger.
Three labels matter for promotional products:
- FSC 100%: all bamboo in the product comes from FSC-certified plantations.
- FSC Mix: a mix of certified, recycled and "controlled" material. Common on laminated boards.
- Chain of custody (CoC): the certificate held by each company that handles the material, from mill to factory. Without a CoC certificate at the factory, the finished product cannot legally carry the FSC logo.
What FSC does not cover
FSC says nothing about the electronics, the battery, the adhesive or the finish. A FSC-labelled charger can still have an uncertified coil or a poor battery. Ask for CE, FCC and RoHS test reports separately, and UN38.3 plus MSDS for any product with a battery.
How to verify a supplier claim
- Ask for the FSC licence code (format FSC-C followed by six digits) and look it up in the public FSC certificate database.
- Check that the certificate holder is the factory that assembles your product, or that the factory can show the CoC certificate of its bamboo board supplier plus its own.
- Confirm the scope: the certificate lists which products and materials are covered.
- Ask whether the logo will be printed on the product or only on packaging; product use requires the factory to hold CoC.
When FSC is worth paying for
For corporate gifting programmes with published sustainability targets, for public-sector tenders, and for retail private label in the EU, FSC documentation is often a hard requirement. For a one-off trade show giveaway, the recipient rarely checks, and the budget is usually better spent on a 15W coil and a good engraving.
